In June 2009, the Yale administration unexpectedly announced its decision to close the stable portion of the Armory. The closure was motivated by the economic downturn, as well as the cost of maintaining the facility and supporting the polo program. The barn staff and manager were notified that they would be let go or moved to other roles and that the horses would need to be sold.
Since then, the Polo Alumni Board has worked concurrently with students and club players to develop short- and long-term plans for the future of the team. Under the direction of the Board most of the horses were sold and the remaining fifteen relocated to C&S Ranches in nearby Bethany, CT, where the team now practices. The Board has also begun to plan for the construction of a new facility off-campus. YPEC (Yale Polo and Equestrian Center) is a registered 501(c)3 non-profit organization.
Both the men’s and women’s teams continue to compete throughout the region, train beginners and recruit new players. The horses are trailered to the Armory arena for home matches.
